St. Eustache Church is located on the outskirts of Les Halles, beside a large sculpture titled "Listening" by Henri Miller. It is one of Paris's most beautiful and largest churches (100m long, 44m wide, 34m high), featuring Gothic architectural forms with Renaissance interior decoration. The layout imitates Notre-Dame, with a tall, wide nave, flame-style vaulted ceilings, decorative pillars, and a series of small circular chapels on both sides. Numerous famous frescoes from the Renaissance and Rubens are present (currently under restoration). The solemn altar features colorful stained glass designed by the renowned painter Philippe de Champaigne.
Beautiful circular rose windows and other charming stained glass adorn the north and south sides of the interior. The apse houses a statue of the Virgin Mary, exquisite frescoes (nineteenth-century academic works), and stained glass; many Parisians come here specifically to make wishes and pray.
Construction began in 1532 during the reign of Francis I, but the church was not officially inaugurated until 1637, a century later. The facade remained unfinished until 1754, when the Renaissance front was demolished and replaced with a Neoclassical style. During the French Revolution, it was converted into an agricultural church. A fire in 1844 nearly destroyed it, and repairs were completed during the Restoration period.
Located near the Louvre, the Palais Royal, and the famous Les Halles market, the church was once at the core of Parisian life and enjoyed a glorious era. Many royals and celebrities were baptized here, including Richelieu, Molière, and Pompadour. Notable figures who held grand funerals here include La Fontaine, Molière, and Mirabeau. The young Louis XIV received his first communion here. Among those buried in the church, the most famous are Louis XIV’s minister Colbert and the playwright Molière. The most striking features are Colbert’s beautiful sculptural tomb, Keith Haring’s Jesus Christ altar, and Raymond Mason’s vivid bas-relief depicting the Les Halles market scene.
