The Opera Bastille is located on the Place de la Bastille. Like the Louvre, the Grande Arche of La Défense, and the Bibliothèque nationale de France in the 13th arrondissement, it was part of former Socialist President Mitterrand’s “Grand Projects” plan. This highly modern building is a masterpiece by architect Carlos Ott, featuring an arched glass curtain wall with rhythmic circular and geometric structures supported by a series of columns; a grand staircase serves as an ideal meeting spot in the square. The interior hall is spacious, adorned with ornate granite walls, black seats, and a glass ceiling, housing five movable stages that can accommodate 2700 spectators.
Today, the Bastille has become a new leisure paradise for Parisians. The area surrounding the square is filled with restaurants and cafés. Emerging cultural zones, including high-end French artisan shops and showrooms under the arches of the promenade, along with furniture streets and luxury shopping avenues, make it a popular area for strolling, entertainment, shopping, and relaxation (the square is adjacent to the Marais).
