The park was founded by the Duke of Orléans in 1769. Ten years later, the gardens expanded to 12 hectares, and he invited the renowned painter Carmontelle to design the landscape. Through Carmontelle’s artistic imagination, Parc Monceau became a garden that gathered scenes from all times and spaces. By the late eighteenth century, the famous English landscape expert Blaikie transformed it into a luxurious standard English garden. The current appearance of the garden was re-planned in the nineteenth century by landscape architects Alphand and Davioud.
