(FIAC 2006) was held from October 26 to 30 at the Grand Palais and the Cour Carrée of the Louvre. As Paris’s largest and most pivotal annual art market exhibition, it stands as the city’s grandest international modern and contemporary art fair before winter. Returning to its traditional showcase venue, the Grand Palais, this year also introduced a new space: the Cour Carrée of the Louvre. With an especially grand scale, the fair hosted 168 galleries from 20 countries worldwide.
While Parisian galleries formed the core, exhibitors included major galleries from global art hubs such as New York, London, Berlin, Madrid, Barcelona, Brussels, Amsterdam, and Milan. Eastern representation featured Tokyo, Beijing, and Delhi, while Moscow and Warsaw made notable appearances. Outdoors in the Tuileries Garden, over ten striking monument-like contemporary sculptures and object installations were displayed. The four candidates for the Prix Marcel Duchamp were prominently exhibited at the Grand Palais, a clear strategic move.
As an international art market mechanism and annual celebration, the five-day event attracted nearly one million visitors, with crowds resembling a bustling marketplace—evidence of Paris’s enduring dream to be the world’s art market hub. Solo exhibitions were rare; most were group shows. Lacking a specific thematic focus, the fair offered a diverse mix: modern art dominated by painting, contemporary art by video, objects, sculpture, and installation.
Visitors could see works by modern masters including Picasso, Matisse, Dalí, Giacometti, Albers, Rosenberg, and Voroshilov. Contemporary stars included Basquiat, Keith Haring, Miquel Barceló, Jeff Koons, Tony Cragg, Anish Kapoor, Daniel Buren, Annette Messager, Bertrand Lavier, Wim Delvoye, Alain Sechas, Wang Du, Sophie Calle, Thomas Hirschhorn, Maurizio Cattelan, and Subodh Gupta. The four young Duchamp Prize candidates that year were Leandro Erlich, Adel Abdessemed, Philippe Mayaux, and Bruno Peinado.
