Antoine Bourdelle (A. Bourdelle, 1861–1929) was a French sculptor in the early 20th century and a prolific artist, best known for his statues. This sculpture museum is located behind the Montparnasse Tower in a red brick building. It was Bourdelle’s studio; he rented it in 1884 when he moved from southern France to Paris for further studies, living and working there until his death in 1929. After his passing, his widow and daughter bequeathed the studio and all his works to the Paris municipal government, including 876 sculptures, 1,500 drawings, and 100 paintings. To honor this master sculptor, the city established it as a museum, which opened on July 4, 1948.
