. On Sunday, July 1, 2006, the first day of the French summer holidays finally arrived after long anticipation. Conversations inevitably turned to “Where are you going this year?” followed by the polite wish for a pleasant vacation. Many Parisians rushed to their destinations on Friday evening; Saturday saw heavy traffic leaving the city gates. By Sunday morning, those departing had left, making the afternoon streets smoother. This annual ritual leaves the beautiful metropolis to tourists from around the world.
Amidst blue skies and white clouds, the heat (over 30°C) resembled that of France’s overseas territories. Following the Gay Pride Parade, the city hosted its most exotic event: the Paris Tropical Carnival. Organized for residents of overseas territories, it gathered tens of thousands of citizens living in the Paris metropolitan area. The colorful carnival became a joyous parade, bringing festive cheer to the city.

The procession began at Place de la République and ended at Cour de Vincennes. Long teams representing their beloved territories displayed authentic Caribbean, Amazonian, or Indian Ocean island costumes and historical scenes. Amidst light-and-sound floats and music, participants danced and sang along the route. Rock and electronic music floats were particularly striking. Thousands of young people surrounded the floats, dancing to energetic rhythms and cheering wildly. The crowd moved powerfully with the music, presenting a unique cultural spectacle of the metropolis.
